Can't render! "Serious error"

I can't seem to render anything now! Always comes up with 'serious error'. So I recorded via resampling, and then when I tried to save it said 'cannot save while recording'. This was after a serious error came up just before recording. Recording came out fine tho, and i'd saved the set just before, so no harm done.

I have a feeling it might be connected to the RME problem, that when I change sample rates it crashes the audio driver. Cos I work at 24/48 and render to 16/44.1.

I'm using RME multiface+Cardbus.

to be honest, its not a biggy ... only if the set is hitting the cpu so hard it can't play, and anyway sound quality is better when resampling.

I think it is to do with changing sample rate - I did a successful render last night in 24/48. Will supply crash logs tomo/later.
