I'm thinking of taking some time to plunge into music fully. The question is: where? Plenty of cities have great scenes, opportunities for collaboration, gigs from DJing to live bands to film commissions, etc. etc. So where would you go, to work on your music? Why?

(I'm more curious about what motivates you to choose a place to be, especially with respect to its music community or opportunities, than I am about getting specific advice. After all, I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet.

I would stay here in Bristol... Great scene and I couldn't just leave everything else behind.

I thought san fran had it goin on? ....... I hear good things about japan and seattle, los angeles is good but you've got to be willing to lead instead of follow cause it's like the 'be your own boss' of scenes out here

Give me a cabin in the mountains near a lake to swim in (lake tahoe area). Somewhere that I can cross country ski/snowshoe in the winter and swim/bike/hike in the summer. Tahoe is nice when it is 95 degrees out during the summer and I am on the lake kayaking, looking at snow covered glaciers....
I don't need people around, they only distract me when I am seriously working away, so a "scene" is irrelevant. See you in 6-9 months

Where would you move to work on (your) music full time?

Berlin or London I would say.

It really depends on what type of full time music work you want to do. Every city is going to offer a different set of opportunities and scenes. You should narrow down a bit more what you want to focus on.

That's true, and why I'm curious to hear from people about where they would move to work on the particular kind of music they're working on. For instance, what's happening in Montreal, or why choose it? (I have some ideas, but I'm curious to hear other opinions, especially from people who've either thought about this more or who are living these situations.)

You mustn't know much about the situation in Athens/Greece other than what you briefly heard in the news, I assume? Yet you have a combative tone. Do some research before you expose yourself or try being nicer.

This thread isn't about the cheapest but the most suitable place for a musician to live. Don't get confused. London and Berlin have the richest music scenes in Europe in my opinion. The list of (electronic) artists and labels in these places is endless. Not to mention the various events that take place every week.

Unless you're not doing it for the music mate, which may be the case indeed..

While it's obviously true that only rich people with rich parents live in london, I believe Berlin is one of the cheapest major cities in Europe. It's one of the reasons it's full of artists.

Berlin has its obvious plusses and minuses.

I'm curious about London: How cheaply could one reasonably find a flat big enough for a bed, a yoga mat, and a little studio setup, in a slightly more out of the way place. Shoreditch, Camden, wherever? Anyone here doing that and have any thoughts about that?

I'd move just outside Boulder Co, either in the mountains or at the foothills.
