Tips for using Live - Live and on-stage with Midi HW

Hi, I have the latest full version of Ableton Live along with an Akai APC 20 controller. I am starting to put something together to play live on-stage shows and was looking for Mac based SW to help automate live performances combining both VST/AU instruments and Midi hardware devices. My main boards will be a Motif XS and a Roland V-Synth. I also want to integrate Arturia Analog Factory from the computer as well as some additional samples.
I'm looking for SW to perform two essential functions:
1-Fast, reliable VST/AU instrument hosting
2-Automation of song sets with Midi/virtual instrument loading/patch changes.
I am very new to Ableton Live and have barely scratched the surface so I'm not sure if Live is a good solution, and if so, what tips/tricks there are to use Live for live performances, or if I should be looking for more of a stand-alone focused application for doing this...and if so, any recommendations.
Any help/pointers would be greatly appreciated.
