another newbie question

I've been at this for a couple months now and learning little by little. I want to learn how to remix or re-master some older songs (rock)to have a punchier and thick bottom end in the fashion that it's done by remixers on Crooklyn Clan etc. Can someone give me some advice? My assumption is to first warp the track, then add a midi kick drum with a deep bottom end, and then layer it over the original track. Ive tried it but it makes the final mixdown go into the red. Ive dj'ing for 3 years but some of the older recordings of the 80's that I have just lack that punchy bass.
