Comping a vocal track

Hi all

I notice people all seem to have different approaches to comping a vocal track (or any other type of live track for that matter) so I wrote up a short post about my personal approach here:

I work in arrangement view, with about a dozen empty tracks (output turned off on these) to hold takes. I record in a single track about these dozen take tracks, then drag the takes down to the empty tracks when I stop the transport after each take. Auditioning takes amounts to setting the loop braces for the right section, then turning on the track output for one take track at a time. I highlight a section of a take that I want to be in the final comp and copy/paste it to the comp track. I've been doing it for a while now, with leads and background vocals, and have gotten to the point where it's almost as fast for me as working in Logic with quickswipe. I like the fact that I can see all the takes at once, and that I can color takes on the fly as they are recorded to indicate good ones etc. Of course, this isn't the right workflow for tracking your own vocals ...

I can definitely see the advantages to having all the takes in parallel rather than serially along a single track. I guess the main difference is that you need to stop and start each take individually where I like to just kick back and hear them all one after another, as well as record multiple takes without touching the computer.

The colouring of takes isn't something I have played with yet but sounds like a great idea, I'll look into that.
