I've been researching that topic for years, too.
I had a working M4L-deivce for drums like yours, but I cancelled it because I found it not universal enough. As I did a lot of improvised music I couldn't know what beat or time the drummer would play. So for example it wouldn't work if he'd play just a subtile brush swish on the snare or a shaker.
But for a steady beat AND tempo it should work, yes. In the demo video you're always looking for the back beat, don't you?! I guess in a certain timing window?!

Some month ago I made a device for harmonic instruments as I'm a piano player. I had some very good results, because I went a completely different way than before... You can see a short dem here:

Yes, it looks for events on the main beats of the bar - one, two, three and four, adapting the window size to suit the playing style that's being observed. Hopefully with a good balance between response and stability!

I do share a lot of devices that I've made.
But this one is really too much work to simply share it and the concept is very unique . I hope you understand that.

I suggested ableton to make an integrated audio effect from that which would enable you to let ableton live follow any live played music.
So far they didn't react. Gently force them to do, maybe it becomes reality...

Oh, it's not just that I requested a feature. I offer to work together on a universal solution bringing in all my knowledge. As I said, my version is made with M4L. But to work properly under any circumstances it would need to be integrated more deeply into the DAW.

So if you're interested in something like that, write them an email or post it here...
