In advance, sorry--I'm new and i've looked around for these answers. I assume i'm supposed to use my arrow keys to get around my clips, but i can't figure out a way to quickly get what i would normally call my cursor into that view. I can select the track headings (I assign them keys by their numbers based on reading that in a tutorial or book or something) but i can't press a down arrow to move between clips/fire them with return. In a webpage or other program window I would be able to use tab to skip around fields but obv. that is not possible with ableton. is there a different key combo to jump to the clip view (or wherever else)? In the mean time i've been assigning some key to some empty clip slot, which is workable, but i'd prefer something better.
Second and related: Is it possible to map a key or control to do the same function in different settings? for example, to control the pan or gain on whatever track you have selected or the first knob/res/on-off switch on a given effect? Sorry, I'm new. my impression is that controls which are hidden because you don't currently have a clip selected are not activated, so you can map one knob to a different function on every track? This would be especially useful for my monitor/arm/solo buttons since i am using a mac, so my function keys don't control their monitor switches (and i'd rather wait till i can afford a more dedicated audio workstation. Honestly I just don't want to give up those convenient buttons, but I will if you people tell me to.
