Why do these two feedback loops sound different?

I have one audio track called feedback chain, with a chain of effects on it, and called feedback loop, with nothing on it, and one called output with nothing on it. The output of feedback chain is set to feedback loop, the input of feedback loop is set to feedback chain, and the output of feedback loop is set to feedback chain. The only track going to master output is output, which gets input from feedback chain (I set it up like that so I have a volume control for the feedback).
When I set the input of feedback chain to feedback loop instead of the default Ext. In, or I change the output of each track to sends only but leave the inputs set to the other track, the sound changes, getting more or less distorted. Why is this, shouldn't these all produce basically the same routing? Does one kind of routing raise the gain or clip differently?

Also noticed a feedback loop sounds different when there's another chain in the audio effects rack, even if that chain is muted and unselected.... No idea on that unless I'm forgetting something really dumb.
