Specifically, what is happening is we are playing live and using clip view to trigger scenes. While a scene is playing, I'd like to be able to:

[*]arm a midi track to record starting on the "one"
[*]have it record for a pre-determined amount of time
[*]start playing back along with the other clips in the scene after the pre-determined amount of time is over.

This kind of thing is possible with some modification.

As far as I know, you can't have a clip record for a predetermined amount of time and stop in vanilla Live. I'm sure there's a clever M4L hack out there somewhere that does something similar, but that's a solution through a separate product.

What you can do, which isn't perfect but might be workable, is to leverage the MIDI overdub function.

Have an empty MIDI clip in the desired slot when you trigger the scene. Configure it to have the length and behavior you want. If you have the "OVR" overdub switch turned on, any MIDI notes that come into that track will be overwritten onto that clip as it's playing. The clip will of course loop after its length, which means that any notes you play after it's looped will also go into it, but you can use "undo" to remove the last pass.
