possible intermittent max for live bug?

hello ableton community,
i use ableton and more importantly max for live for djing. but for quite some time i have been running into some serious performance issues with max for live, and wanted to write on the ableton forum about this issue, to see if i could get any insight on how to fix this problem from the people at ableton, and also to see if anyone else has been struggling with this issue at all. the weirdest part about my problem in max for live (which i'll explain momentarily) is that the actual performance of max for live itself is completely random. for quite some time now, max for live has only been working correctly about 50% of the time. this is what i have diagnosed just this week.
on wednesday, i tried to load a few different ableton live sets that contain 3 or 4 max for live plugins for some songs that i have been working on. any time that i opened a set, all of the max for live plugins within that set were completely blank. all of my vsts, audio effects, and midi effects were functioning completely normally and looked normal, but any max for live plugin's box in the set would be completely white. some max for live apps responded differently then others. when i clicked on the blank white screen on one of the plugins, the plugin returned to how it should look normally. the parameters on the plugin all functioned normally after that as well. but once i clicked on a different track and went back to the first one, the max for live plugin would go back to being blank again. but with most other max for live plugins i was not as lucky. if clicked on the blank screen of the other plugins, the screen would return to how it would normally look, but when i tried to change the parameters on the plugins once i could see them, the plugins were almost entirely unresponsive. and i'll also note that during the couple of times that i kept trying to reopen certain sets of mine, ableton would crash on me a few of those times as well. what's crazy is that a day or two before this, i was opening up these sets with absolutely no issues whatsoever. i just opened up the set and everything worked fine. why this random behavior now?
so on thursday i decided to conduct a little test. i tried to open the same sets 20 times in a row, to see how many times i would be successful or unsuccessful with it. and max for live worked perfectly all 20 times! no crashing, no anything. i didn't do anything different at all and it worked the whole day without a single problem. i was hoping this problem was behind me at this point. but i was wrong.
i tried it again earlier today and started having the exact same performance issues that i described above. blank white max for live plugins, most of which didnt function properly at all. no errors in the max window at all. have i slipped into the twilight zone here?
i honestly don't know where to go from here. this has frustrated me to no end. am i doomed? is there anything i can do to make this work 100% of the time? i've just been trying as hard as i can to stay positive and not get frazzled. if anyone can give me some insight or help me fix this problem i'd really appreciate it. from what i have gathered from it, there has to be some kind of random intermittent bug in the program itself, but i could be wrong. please help!!!

and on a small sidenote, i know that max has a new update as well which is max 5.1.9, but is that only an update for max/ msp? i couldn't see an update for max for live on cycling 74's website, so i figured i'd ask. if there hasn't been an update for max for live in the last week or two, i should definitely be on the newest version (5.1.8 is what i'm on right now).
