Ableton Forum

I played with one at GC and just had an absolute blast. I can put together tons of layered loops in just a few minutes. I just wish it wasn't so pricey. Anyone using one of these? I'm considering splurging for fun.

I've have one, but yet to adapt it in the studio. It's ALOT of fun to play tho! I have only played with it so no serious work with it yet.

I would like to learn how others are using it in the studio and during live gigs.

I just got one... comes with 200 sounds, so it kinda doesn't sound like much, although these sounds can be changed to different keys & scales giving you more 'sounds' - I wish you could add your own sounds through it though. You sort of can with the 15 Vocoder presets.
Apparently you can midi map the xy to ableton and add effects using the touch pad - I wish you could add effects THROUGH the kaossilator, but I think that's actually what the KP3 does. I quickly added the USB midi drivers but Ableton couldn't find it.

Kaossilator creates the sounds, you spin grooves on them using the touchpad and you record these phrases or loops into one of four buttons. You can keep adding more 'loops' on top of the loop you just made.
I can see where it might work live, & I could plug in a song and remix it on the fly or just jam. You can save your favourite sounds on 8 buttons along the top so you could probably use this live as part of your set. It's really easy to use - I'm still playing with it at the moment.
I'll be writing up some reviews on it & making some youtube clips. I could out grow this pretty quickly though, because you can sample loops in ableton and they don't overwrite themselves like the ones on the Kaos do. Each time you 'layer' another loop into a button, you've essentially flattened that loop as a new phrase & you can't undo it.
All in all, it's very easy to use, very responsive. For me, it sort of makes some things that Ableton does already, ie sampling, loops, synths and effects, but makes it more available quickly.
