Recording two channels routing problem

hi there,
i ve got a problem, and i ve spent hours trying to fix it, but i didnt find any solution.
my problem is the following:
i've got a yamaha audiogram 6 usb interface. with this i can record either two channels (mono) or just one (stereo).theres a stereo/mono switch.
now i wanna record two channels and i put the switch on the interface to mono and in live i create two channels. on the first i select "1" for the input on the second "2". when i record now, i get the same signal on both channels ( when i sing in just one of the microphones, the signal is on both channels.
when i create one stereo channel and i only sing in one mic it works (i hear it only on one side).
so what do i do wrong?
would be really cool if somebody knew an answer
thanks a lot!
