CPU spikes and Max Crashes

Hi, So very recently something strange has been occurring, spikes in my CPU from 2-5% to 200-300%, statically freezing live and audio output, but only for a second or two. This began happening when I was running outside Max5 (RT) apps and linking them to live via IAC BUS. Then live would do this CPU spike, throwing off Max and crashing it. So I restarted my comp and am running Live alone, playing a single clip and the spikes still regularly occur. I am running no outside VST's or anything. I'm on OSX 10.6.8 with 4gb of ram with Live 8.2.5. Anyone have any idea what's causing this?
