Ableton being glitchy/cutting out & can't find audio units

The last few days I've found ableton live to cut in and out whenever I try to play from a soft synth. If I just hold down a single key, it'll play for at most a second (sometimes half a second, .1 sec etc.) and then it'll just fade. It does this regardless of which synth I'm using. If I hold down more than a single key, sometimes all the notes will constantly start and stop (maybe depending on preset/synth?) but usually just fade out after a second like usual. If I just draw in a bunch of midi data, though, it'll play perfectly.
I'm also having issues with Ableton recognizing audio units, though it recognizes their VST counterparts. I also have this problem with Logic. I can occasionally get them to detect audio units (more often with Logic), but not consistently. I have audio units enabled in ableton preferences, and the files are in the right folders. I've googled, but come up with nothing so far.
Any suggestions?
