Specific Library files missing very strange!

Can't seem to get my head around this one.
An artist I produce with (who also uses Ableton Live 8 suite) brought a project over for me to help him finish. Upon loading up his project a bunch of specific library files were failing to play. for example the 1 bongo sound he used from the latin percussion library was missing by everything else was there.
Naturally i went to just load in a fresh rack from my own library but when I do this it loads the whole rack but then the 1 bongo i was looking for is just TOTALLY missing!!!! VERY STRANGE! This also happened with some piano sounds and some other percussion on other tracks. all missing just the specific sounds he happened to use while everything else is still there.
I also tried loading these same suite instruments into a fresh new Live set and even then the specific files/hits/samples my friend had used are just simply missing.
any info on how this happened as well as the easiest way to fix it would be VERY MUCH appreciated.
I'm pretty sure re-installing will fix the library issue but I'm still perplexed as to how this even happened and if its happened to anyone else.
