.aif files in Library cannot be opened or previewed

Post by icedsushi » Thu Oct 06, 2011 4:38 am

Why is it that any file with the extension .aif from Live's library cannot be opened or previewed with anything other than within Live? Check it out, the .aif samples from Latin Percussion or Live 7 Legacy packs for example. There's an error message when you try to play them with quicktime or the quick look feature in OSX finder.

The .wav files play in OSX finder, quicktime, open with other applications, etc, but the .aif files do not. Also note the duration & audio bit rate that shows in the info window.

Yes I already know it's weird, could you do me a favor & check it out though, are you able to reproduce this? At the moment, I have 2 macs & it does it on both of them.

Yep - doesn't work. It's an Ableton copy-protection thing… There was a thread with an official statement - can't find right now.

Thanks, I was thinking it was either this, or it could have been something wrong with my finder preferences and .aif files.

It's kind of random that Ableton would only protect a small portion of the library though isn't it?! All the .wav files in the library can be used anywhere, opened with any app and that's the bulk of the samples in the library.

If anyone can find that link with the official statement I'd appreciate it. Kind of curious why it would have to be that necessary. I can't think of any other sample libraries I've bought in standard .aif/.wav format that you weren't able to open the audio files directly and be able to sort through audition them properly with the finder.

Thanks! Still it does seem strange that it's only small parts of the library.

At the moment I don't need to open them outside of Ableton since it's my only DAW, but I could see a time where I might want to do that, edit them with an audio editor or load into Maschine, etc. I wonder if there would be an efficient way of exporting them. I know technically maybe we're not supposed to be thinking about that, but I also know the copy protection is only to prevent file sharing which I have no intention of. The samples are only for my own use, so I wouldn't see a problem with freeing them up for use across any program on my computer. Or at least being able to audition them with quick look in the finder.
