panning doesn't work

hi guys,
yesterday i started mixing down a tune, only to realize that live refused to pan anything! all that happens when i turn the knob is a very slight increase in volume at that side, with the signal still coming unaffected from the side that should be muted.. i tried panning different instruments & samples in multiple live sets, yet it's the same problem everywhere. this is driving me crazy! until recently live never gave me any crap at all, and now suddenly it's crashing all over the place, it's changing my windows color scheme, delay compensation ruins automations, and now this...
could this be the result of interaction with a newly installed vst plugin? i made no changes to the settings whatsoever, and i would be very surprised should the problem lie within my sound card, since my laptop is brand new and live worked perfectly before.
any comment at all would be much appreciated 'cause i'm getting quite desperate and have even begun considering switching DAWs.
