Just wanna rip a short bit of audio from a .avi movie.
Is there a way to do it in Live?
Or do I need some other software to do it?
Cheers

Use Handbrake to convert it to an mp4 (so Ableton can read it), then drag it into your set and resample the audio onto another track

You could also use Adobe Premiere, but that Handbrake method is way easier.

And you know that is illegal to do right? My old band had samples from some various movies (which I helped at one point to put a phrase together). I would love to use some audio clips on some tracks depending on what the topic is about. But copyright infringement is there and some get caught without getting rights to use the audio, etc....I am just saying, use at your own risk.

The question of legality is a good one. I use samples all the time directly off the cable set top box. I have very little fear of repercussions though as I don't ever sell my recordings.
How many of us are trying to make a living selling recordings? If you are trying to make money then of course get permission for your samples. If you are like me and do it purely for fun sample away.
My last album was called Television. Feel free to listen and then send your best lawyer after me. I eat lawyers for breakfast! Nom Nom

On OSX, I always roll with Audio Hijack Pro as opposed to Soundflower so I always have a directory of the raw sample to fall back to.
For Windows I would just use Audacity armed with "what-u-hear" armed, though I've noticed a trend the last few years that a lot of soundcards / drivers disable this now.
This technique is great for samples ripped from video but manoman, Spotify has become irreplaceable to me for squeezing snares or one hits. Y'all try this? I've got a premium account which streams at 192 which is much better than the free account's 96.
