What would be the best piece of hardware...or software to get for recording vocals. I was using Line 6 Toneport but since I bought a new system with Windows 7 the thing just won't work despite downloading new drivers etc. I thought of getting the newer Line 6 stuff but a check on their website revels a lot of dissatisfied customers so I'm somewhat wary. Any suggestions?

I've had pretty good luck with a Rode NT1A. Don't forget a decent pop filter and something to deaden the sound. (we used a rigged-ass drape heh)

Also, I've been messing around with Izotope Nectar demo and got some pretty killer results. It's expensive though, and I'm sure most of Nectar's functions can be recreated with native Live plugs pretty easily.

Hard to say cuz not every mic regardless of cost will suit a person.
If you dont have a proper recording space for vocals, i say skip a LDC mic and go for a dynamic mic like the shure Sm7b. Thats about half your budget. I have the Sm7b so i'm not just going off some shit i've read. I also prefer that mic at times over other mics i have which cost significantly more. With the remaining money, invest in a dedicated mic pre. I 've heard the FMR RNP is great for the money, but i dont know how it will pair with the shure. I think as long as it has plenty of gain, it'll be fine.

As far as plugins, im still amazed at how the waves CLA artist vox channel gets me to that radio sound with only a little effort. It just makes the vocals sit pretty in the mix

So is firewire an option for your interface?

If so I suggest the saffire pro 24

spend the rest on a nice large diaphram...
