I'm about to work with a drummer with an electronic kit for a side project, and the kit only has midi out...

What standalone midi interfaces would be considered decent these days under $150?

Motu midi lite, or would this be overkill when I only need 1 midi input?

Dude, 6 foot MIDI to USB2 cables run $4-8 shipped on eBay. They work fine.

I've had bad luck in the past with those... I suppose I can give them a try again.

the Allen&Heath Xone 2D has usb and traditional midi ports. It can act as a midi interface and even has a dedicated midi clock. Arguably one of the most versatile pieces of gear I own

Just got me one of those, works just fine! :D
But yeah if you're just looking to connect one instrument, get one of the < 10$ cables.
