not able to pan properly!

I'm embarrassed to admit this, especially because I've actually been using Live for a while now, but I can't get any tracks to pan properly! I've just been ignoring the problem up until now, but I finally decided to try to figure it out, and I'm at a complete loss.
I'm usually running Ableton out through my Saffire Pro 24 to headphones for monitoring. With this setup, when I pan all the way to the left there is no change in levels, and when I pan to the right the levels drop to zero. This happens on midi/audio tracks and the master track.
To try to troubleshoot things, I disconnected my Saffire and tried running Ableton through the on-board soundcard into (different) headphones, and now there is no change in levels when panning from left to right, although there seems to be some kind of stereo widening effect happening when panning.
I'm completely baffled at this point, so any suggestions would be much appreciated!
