Is crashing normal if you insert an effect when playing?

With Ableton playing, if I insert an audio effect, reorder a scene, or change an input/output assignment, then I either get a load of noise sent to the Cue out, or Live entirely crashes.
Is this normal? Am I not able to make changes like this while Live is playing..?
I'm running the latest beta, and it was happening on the latest release too..
MOTU Audio Express (latest drivers)
Lion OS X up to date

No luck.. Reinstalled ableton and MOTU drivers..
It doen't happen with empty projects.
I've been sending in the crash reports, but is there a way for me to determine if it's a specific plugin that's doing it?

Remove all plugins and add one by one.
Retest. If 'it's a Plug in you will be able to find it.
Troubleshooting takes time, be patient and methodical.

I've removed all plugins, and its still crashing..
I deleted all but 4 scenes, and all but 1 midi and 1 audio track.
If an audio clip is playing and I reorder one of the non-playing scenes, then it crashes. (it doesnt crash if audio isnt playing)
However, I've noticed if I make a new identical stripped out set from scratch, then it doesnt happen in the new one..
It's a pretty large and complicated set.. is there a better way to sort this out than having to build it from scratch?
thanks for the help, I really could do with loving Ableton..

Do you mean downgrade to Live 7?
To be honest, I'd rather rebuild my set.. but if that doesnt work, I guess downgrading is always an option..

have you tried the latest beta? L8 is still in a beta state and the actual beta might hold big improvements.
Always run live as a beta. Release versions have for some strange reasons often additional flaws.

Yep, I'm using the latest beta.
I've been checking for updates frequently as this is rather frustrating..
