Drum Rack launch using Autohotkey??????

Hello,
I thought I was being really clever making my own controller from arcade buttons and a USB game controller,
Using autohotkey I can send any keystroke I like. My problem is with the drum rack though.
When I press 'a' on my qwerty keyboard I can see the relevant cell light up on my drumrack, but when I press the button on my controller that sends 'a' it does not light up. I know that it sends 'a' because I have mapped it to other parts of ableton.
Does anybody have a work around? I assume there is a difference somewhere between using the keyboard and sending keystrokes. Does anybody know a way to fool ableton into accepting keystrokes or some other workaround??
thanks.
