I think the dollar scale is too low to give any useful information. Very few people are going to be less than $1,000. You buy a new computer & you're already over the top, even without buying anything else the whole year.

You have know way to know whether someone spent $1,000, or $25,000 on music gear completing a while studio this year...big difference & both would select the last choice.

$1500 on new monitors and $100 on Live Suite.
Promised myself no new toys, but I needed to fix my monitor problem and someone sold Live 8 Suite to me for $200 then sold Live 7 for $100. :)

Next year is going to be brutal as I'm going to need a new macbook pro 17". The other ones don't include an express car slot and I'm not counting on Thunderbolt considering how there are pretty much about 4 devices that support it as of now.

i just started in electronic music this year so i've bought so far

Ablton Suite Boxed version (i upgreded form intro Bit by bit over the year)
Sylenth
Launch pad
Zero Sl MKII
Small Aki 25key midi controller
Sylenth
M-audio sound card

Now i just kneed to learn how to use this stuff. (thats the fun part right??)

Also bought
2 Taylor GS mini Guitars (brought one and decided that value was too good so i got another to take out to work with me)
LR Baggs M1 pickup for my home Mini(might get another one i think for the work GS)
Several other guitar related bits a pices

Not sure weather to count these
I brough a new laptop to take to work for making music and playing games on. ASUS G74SX
I did a sizeable upgrade to my Car Stereo (2 amps, sub, 6x9's, pluse housings and cabling).
I could not count how much i have spent on CD's and downloads but we will go with quite a bit

OMG...I don't even wanna know.

At least $2500 for my current studio DIY computer (built in April and upgraded since).
$3,000 on other "stuff" (flat screen TV for the studio, Komplete 8, misc Native Instruments stuff, $400 on a studio chair, $1,000 on a set of V-Drums...it goes on and on). Too much!

Let's not begin to talk about marketing expenses...

I've at least made that back in booking fees. Thankfully!!

1 second hand classical guitar - £250 (Best purchase of the year in terms of personal musical development)
6 sets of Pro Arte strings - £60
Guitar Tuner, Capo, string winder - £40
Bug mic - £45
Sheet Music - £40
Casio Digital Piano £300 (for £300 it's awesome)
Lacie Disk 1GB, 7200RPM - £110 (Best purchase in terms of performance boost for my system)

Total = £845

Early next year I'll be looking to spend around 1K on a new computer. Current one is about 4 years old, only supports 2GB RAM, and the cardbus slot is broken which means I can't plug in my Firewire card,

Also next year (maybe?) will be upgrading to Live 9 which I can only assume will be mind blowing.
