i have 2 inputs on my sound card, and i am trying to record each to sepreate tracks in Live 4.
i have set track one to input one, and track 2 to input 2, though i cannot get live to record both simultaneously.
i can get it to record both channels into one track,(the "1/2" option) one input being the left channel and one being the right channel.
so how can i record input one to one track and input two to a different track, simultaneously?

I would also like to know this. I've been thinking about buying an external soundcard and just thought it would be automatically detected. Would like to know more before I buy.

I'm using the M-audio firewire 410, if this helps anyone answer.

If you're recording a single instrument in stereo - it'd be better to just record on a single channel and select ch1-2 as the input.
I'm not sure if Live allows you to arm more than one track at a time.
Check in the preferences - I know there are settings for "exclusivity" for the mute and solo buttons - there might be one for the track arm button as well.
Basically, if you set a function to "exclusive" then you can only have one track in that mode (muted, soloed, armed) at a time.

well, i'm trying to record guitar and bass at the same time, so each track in mono.
i looked in preferences and didnt find anything, and searched the manual, and found one instance of exclusivity, and it didnt pertain to recording multi track audio.
so i'm stuck, unless i overlooked somthing.
if there is no way for me to beable to do this, I'm gonna freak on customer support both at Ableton and at M-audio..
this should be easy to do...

you can arm two tracks at the same time.
on OSX you just arm one , and then CMD+Click the other one to arm a 2nd. so on Windows its probably ALT+Click or CTRL+Click or some variation to arm at the same time.
then assign the record clip buttons to either 2 midi keys or keyboard keys and you can start recording them at the same time too.

To record arm multiple tracks command-click (Mac) or control-click (PC) the record arm buttons (subsequent to the first one).
This behaviour can be changed in Lives preferences.

Need to get instrument AND Mic working simultaneously between gearbox and ableton live. Can't find enough info regarding dual-tone operation. The inst. on line 1-2 is heard. Can't hear mic on line 3-4. Have tried arming 2 ableton tracks. What do I do to record the inst. and mic on separate tracks? Thanks, Rick

Either bypass Gearbox and record directly into Live using the toneport as a sound card or you would go into preferences and reconfigure your inputs.

Options | Preferences | Record Warp Launch | Unclick "Arm" under "Exclusive" for the mouse / command key combo challenged.

You can arm multiple tracks on one scene in session view (by techniques mentioned above) and then trigger recording of them all simultaneously using scene launch. For this to work, the option "Start Recording on Scene Launch" must be enabled. There's a shortcut to this pref on the context menu if you right-click the scene on Master track.
