If it weren't for Apple, personal computers would be boring to the point of tears. While technologies advance incrementally faster processors, bigger hard disks, wireless capabilities, and so on, the computers themselves are pretty much just boxes of off-the-shelf components, slapped together by robots with all the design sense of a Soviet-era apartment building architect. Most PCs are ugly with a capital UG.

Apple, in contrast, tends to adopt important technologies ahead of the pack—FireWire, USB, flat-panel displays, twin processors, optical superdrives, and so on—and lovingly wraps them in brilliant designs that have included, in recent years, such icons as the iMac G5, the Power Mac G5 tower, the longneck (sunflower) iMac, the Mac Cube, the fruit-colored iMacs, and the PowerBook and iMac portable families.

I did not write, I qute . the last time jokes were flying, I posted about Apple developing Firewire, and the windows gui. I got some angry response about me claiming facts I don't know . I developed a new syndrome of MacQute. I can only qute and feel anxiety when want to speak my mind

Although to be fair (and feign obliviance to sarcasm) There was Xerox, Adobe, and MP3.com, as well as Sony, Matushita, and Toshiba...

Personally Amiga and Amstrad had better GUI's. Nice how they used to
put the OS on instant loading ROM back then. Always avoided IBM until
486's

However on the Microsoft front..... The reason why they are successful is
they are "early adopters" they see a new technology and buy the
company that owns it. They don't spend billions on R&D and fail 90% of
the time, they get those that have already proven they have a future and
take them to the next level. More power to em. Seems to be working.
One thing I know is it's really hard finding anyone who really used
the "net" until Free MSN net access hit with Win95. Before then it was just
us geeks on BBSs. Now it's 8yos downloading gigs per day.

Did they spend millions on developeing Firewire? nope....
Can you use Firewire in Windows? Yeap...

Does anyone really care if you like Mac or Windows? Nope!

Apple did not acquire NeXT to develop MacOSX.

NeXT were paid to take over Apple.

Hehe... yes it was. I used to manage a computer lab at my old college that had about six NeXT machines in it, including two NeXT cubes, and their HUMONGOUS laser printer. They were fuckin awesome. Anyone else actually use NeXT STeP? Any one else remember F-117 Nighthawk? (Stealth fight flight sim on NeXT STeP)

To the contrary, Microsoft has the highest R&D budget in the known universe. Secondly, they have one of the highest R&D/capital ratios in the world too. Bottom line MS spends a shitload on R&D.

What they do not do is innovation. Their R&D is used to make a product better or more full featured than their competitors and drown the market afterwards with their massive marketing budgets.

The amount of money they spend on their R&D miniscules the amount of money they spend in aquisitions.

multiprocessor servers where not invented by apple. Most apps can't use them anyways. and shuttle proved the validity of small form factor.

Intel just released a mini pc form too... I cant find the link, but it's not the mini-itx, it's a full blown system.

intel didnt release anything.

they announced a mini pc design. nothing more, nothing less. its a box with nothing in it as of now.

The mini itx is very nice, I like custom stuff
You might consider posting that somewhere else, this is a "nothing to see here, please move on computer biggotry" thread, this and the intel multi usb server is to serious and valuable, and does not fit here.
