Need help with creating a j dilla style bass preset

I've been messing around with operator for a long time now and I still don't know what I'm really doing.
For most of my music I just split my sample into to 2 tracks and high pass filter one and low pass filter the other (and ofcourse echancing the bass). This works 50% of the time, but the times it don't all I get is a rough sounding bass which collides with other sounds and has kicks which ruin the beat.
Now I'm trying to create my own basslines but I can't nail that warm fuzzy bass J Dilla reproduces with ease. Also I'd thought I'd just mention, I don't want to use VSTs just an operator and a few audio effects.
Could someone please lend me some tips and instructions on recreating bass similar to Dilla's style with Ableton.
