ableton not recognizing audio device

i believe my rca cable is plugged into the microphone input. still no sound coming out.i possibly thought there was no sound in my sp 303 to begin with and thats why i couldnt hear anything coming out of the laptop. then i just turned on the "vinyl simulator effect" to see if the computer would even pick that up , but still no luck. what preferences do i have to change to get audio from my sp 303 to ableton/laptop. plz help. im really not familiar with computer technology so you guys would really have to break it down for me.
