aftermarket video card compatibility

I recently purchased Live but am unable to run it as it is apparently incompatible with the ATI HD 6870 video card in my mac. Ableton support helped me determine the problem but don't have a fix. Looks like the issue is in an apple-provided library as apple's own DVD player won't run on my system, either, it turns out. As such, a fix is basically out of Ableton's hands.
My problem is in determining video hardware that is known to be good. Apple doesn't publish a list of supported hardware, since they only 'support' the hardware they ship. If I look to currently shipping hardware, I have o guarantee that it will work with an older version of the OS than they are shipping with - and I'm not yet willing to upgrade to Lion. Looking to pre-Lion video hardware that was shipping in Mac Pros, I mostly see video card chipsets that aren't even available any longer - HD 5770, for example.
I'm curious whether anyone has experience running Live with something like the HD 6850. Ableton are only able to specify the 6870 and 6670 chipsets as incompatible. They don't know about others.
