ok, how would you approach this? Would you need to use jitter objects like when populating live.clips through the api?

Have a look at the help file and open the patcher "Filling and dumping data".
Instead of setting the multisliders manually you may control them with incoming notes.

yes, what i thought about is really dropping a midifile that is recorded in Live into live.drop and then fill the live.step like with the multisliders.

When working with midi files you'd need [detonate] for reading the notes which is rather tricky.
I think it would be easier using midi clips and getting the notes with functions of the Live API.

But why would you want to store a midi clip into live.step instead of just looping the clip itself?

First of all being able to use a counter and other objects that spits out a number when I bang it to play the sequence and then all the features that are build into live.step.
There is so much that can be done with live.step
Thanks.

Here is basic patch that copies a midi clip (1 bar with 16th notes) into live.step.

it works great, thanks!
Can this be done without the expr or other advanced math stuff?

In any case, 'expr' is needed to convert the note start times (given in beats as float) to integer steps.
But the 'round' operation is optional, it can be omitted if the clip notes are strictly quantized to the 16th grid.

[expr 4*$f1+1] is *not* advanced math stuff, I'm afraid. It's the same as:
input
I
[* 4.]
I
[+ 1]

it looks frightening to me
I prefer my patches and objects to look like fun toys and not like homework
