live kick drum master tempo

hey guys
ive been trying to create a max patch which takes real audio coming in from a kick drum, and then uses this 4:4 beat to set the master tempo of ableton.
a patch like this would consist of two parts the way im thinking about it
1. filter and trigger - basically takes the audio in and tells the system when there has been a kick.
2. tempo calculator - the part which averages out the time between those kicks to calculate a smooth bpm.
i think ive got most of part 2 down, but its part 1 and getting the two to inter relate which im not too sure about. i would link my patch but its an absolute mess!
does anyone have any tips on getting this done well, or better still - has anyone tried to do this same thing before?
my goal is to use this live (i already feed the kick drum from our drummer into ableton to trigger sidechain compression for synth bass lines we play) to set the tempo for ableton so that loops and arps etc are kept in time with the band, rather than the drummer performing to a click track, so we keep the life in live performances.
cheers in advance and i look forward to your replies
