I thought the whole point was to make your own? isn't that the fun of it? taking shit and making it your own right? i dunno. my samples and electronic music sucks but i would never buy someone elses samples. i figure if i keep at it they'll get better.

If you don’t buy at least 1 Vengeance sample CD you aren’t a valid DAW user. It doesn’t matter what genre of music you do.

Other than that there are plenty of plug-ins that are sample based. So in a roundabout way most producers are paying for samples.

Can be useful when you're learning, but there's nothing like sorting your own stuff.

I've been buying Computer Music mag for years and have tons of the free ones they ish out. Have used one or two in my stuff but the main benefit I find is inspiration, they trigger ideas and open up the possibility of mixing all sorts of different genres together in your own style. Never bought any specific sample packs though.

You fellas realize there’s a big middle ground of talented music producing between those who only use samples they collected from their portable field recorder with patches they made from scratch and those whose music consists only of factory and bought loops.

If you’re obsessed with every element of your music being created from scratch but the end result is shit or you never actually finish anything then I don’t know what your point is. You’re not going to get any trophies and the end listener usually doesn’t give a shit how you got to that track they love so much.

my outlook is not bc im some kind of miltant purist about it..if i have a bit of money i use it for hardware or other things first...no doubt theres nice stuff being made with bought loops..but, i would not be able to feel as good about, or proud of the end result using prefab source material...as for the listeners w/e..the producer is the first gatekeeper

I prefer to focus on the music, I am no engineer. People are not going to stop dancing because they might recognize a kick or a snare that I use. They might stop if the whole mix sounds shit.

I once won a puremagnetik subscription and used some of their premade clips in my work. some even without tweaking.

I used some of the free partner instruments loops that ableton gave away as well.

Still I would not buy samples. There is so many that I got free already, more than I could possibly ever listen to.

My folder of free samples is 170GB!! Most of them I've never even heard but it's always handy to have them, and plenty have crept in, chopped up, filtered, eq'd, straight up, every which way. You can also use one shots and multisamples in your 'original' creations, probably without feeling too 'dirty' about it

Yesterday I bought Stylus RMX because after years of being in denial I’ve accepted that I’m more of a moodsmith and less of an elaborate drum programmer/mixer. Let the pros do what they do and I’ll do what I do. Of course I’ll add my own flavor, accents, and adjustments to the loops but there’s just so many beats that I wouldn’t even come close to left to my own devices, skills, and attention span.

I got a good amount of the rhythm-lab stuff that gets moderate attention.

It's fun to dig crates and find stuff yerself, imo. I'd rather make something tight out of a fixer-upper than an already pro pre-fab loop that doesn't need to be touched. Guess I can't be satisfied unless I made some kind of change. Drums can be an exception.
