Limiter or Lower Track Volume in Automation?

Well,

It's happening again and it's time to have a refresh on best practices out there...
I have a Guitar Solo track recorded with FX that has a very dynamic output.
It is a distorted solo line. It starts quietly and becomes loud at the end of a long phrase
especially on MID Frequencies. It disturbs the mix by a tad but I'd like to perfect it.

I have two options:

Use a Limiter
Add Track Volume Automation or Clip Volume Automation.

What's the best practice in these cases?

Why not EQ those disturbing mid-frequencies?

if it is not to hard, I would automate volume. If this gets too complicated, use a compressor, but not a limiter. The limiter is, in coarse words, for peaks that you can't hear.

Put on an EQ and spectrum and find the disturbing frequency. You can mouse over the spectrum to find the exact frequency that peaks.

Possibly use the limiter for the occasional odd peak you want to weed out, to keep a more stable/constant volume.

Thank you!
I think I'll mix them all, EQ + Volume Automation + Limiter if needed in the end.
