Limiter or Lower Track Volume in Automation?

Well,
It's happening again and it's time to have a refresh on best practices out there...
I have a Guitar Solo track recorded with FX that has a very dynamic output.
It is a distorted solo line. It starts quietly and becomes loud at the end of a long phrase
especially on MID Frequencies. It disturbs the mix by a tad but I'd like to perfect it.
I have two options:
Use a Limiter
Add Track Volume Automation or Clip Volume Automation.
What's the best practice in these cases?
