Audio DX v. Audio Wave (and studdering clips/samples)

Background: Using Ableton Live 8 mostly for controlling lighting using Enttec's DMXIS as a VST plugin within Live. I'm migrating towards incorporating clips now as backing tracks for my band (Yes, I know, I'm working in reverse as compared to most of you...)
Issue: However, I am having issues with an mp3 file I have loaded as a clip and want/need to use as a backing track for my band this weekend. The clip plays fine within iTunes but when I loaded it into Live 8 (ver. 8.2.6) using the same laptop computer (OS: Windows XP, SP3), it sounded like it was studdering and was unusable. Since it works fine within iTunes and not in Live, I'm assuming that it is not a sound card issue but, rather, an issue/setting within Live. BTW: When I turned WARP off, it seemed to help but did not fix it. Any ideas what to search for?
Possibly related issues: Under audio options, I see that have a choice between "SigmaTel Audio DX" and "SigmaTel Audio Wave" - can someone help educate me on the distinction between these two choices for my audio input/output and let me know if my studder issue could be related?
I also have had issues with trying to use the ASIO driver as this seems to interfere with the output of my DMXIS (I lose the output of my DMXIS VST which controls my lights). I can only get DMXIS to work if I use MME/DirectX as my driver option. Ideally, I'd like to use an ASIO driver so that I can use my FireWire connection with my mixing board but so far no luck. Ideas?
P.S. I did find this under support: https://www.ableton.com/articles/no-sou ... -with-live and will have to give it try when I am able to reconnect with my mixing board this weekend.
