Searched for issue in this forum and found reply "delete the preferences.cfg file" but I don't have any such file, so ...
Live 8 on WinXP, M-Audio MobilePre USB input (Creative Audigy 4 sound card input jack broken), Live driver type ASIO, logged into Windows as Administrator:

Getting set up for the the first time, following the Help steps no problem, until I get to Latency Buffer Size. I can't change it from 2400 Samples, which I'll call "default" here. The value doesn't respond to any keystroke. I can type in new numbers but it reverts to default the instant I leave the field. Experimented with the Audio Device (sound card?) settings and got these results:
> Creative ASIO / default / hear test tone OK
> M-Audio USB ASIO Interface / 256 samples! / CAN'T hear test tone
> SB Audigy 4 ASIO 24/96 [BC00] / default / hear test tone OK
> SB Audigy 4 ASIO [BC00] / default / hear test tone OK

Also tried a general Google search to spare you folks another newbie, but no luck. Any tips?

if you are running asio the latency/buffer controls are in the asio interface, the ones in Lives prefs are bypassed....

I have an mAudio interface that doesn't let me change it's settings while Live is open (using it).

When I close Live, I can change the settings from the software for the device. Then they seam to stay in place when I open Live again.

One or both of those may solve my problem! But it's after midnight so I'll have to test this tomorrow......

Well dang you must have a newer version of MobilePre. Mine has no interface at all; it just shows up in all my recording software as one of the input sources. I've even searched the hard drive and into the MobilePre folder in Programs etc. There's a .dll, a readme file and an .exe for uninstalling. Guess I'm going to have to move away from ASIO?? Thought that was the cat's pajamas??

Have you checked the maudio site for the latest drivers?? Usually afterwards, at the bottom right corner of your screen, an icon is available somewhere for settings on your device.

Their latest driver was MobilePre_6.0.1_5.10.0.5131.exe dated 2009. For reasons too complicated to explain I only installed it about a month ago. Don't remember seeing anything at all pop up or give me options. Guess I'll have to see if I can wake up a techie at M-Audio to reply to an email about this.

You were right, there was a control panel. I tried to open it. Got the error message in the image below ("...device not detected, panel could not be opened..."). Re-attached the MoblePre USB device, watched it light up, logged off my computer and logged back in. Sometimes Windows needs a smack in the head to detect an attached device. Logged back in, tried the panel, got the same message.

Uninstalled the control panel. Also used an uninstaller program to make sure there were no MobilePre pieces left laying around. Happens. Found the new driver (MobilePre_6_0_1_5_10_0_5131.exe) still on one of my drives and ran it. With the MobilePre still plugged in and lit up. Thought maybe it needed to be there for the install to take. Went to the control panel again. Got the same message. What now?

Well. This is some tricky business. But one thing I noticed was you mentioning te device being plugged in on install. Make sure the device is not plugged in, and no audio programs are open. Other than that... It looks tricky. :/ are you sure you have the driver that best suits your device?

I solved the problem by going to the M-Audio forum. A tech there provided a link with a step-by-step, which I will include here. The main difference for me was that the last screen capture on that page he provided was replaced by something more snazzy on my PC. That's good, right?
