Results from first recording not what expected?

I followed the Ableton help instructions on recording my first audio track. As I was humming into the microphone, I could see the volume levels within Live responding normally. Same thing on my pre-amp. So I know sound was going in; I had done the whole arm the track and click the global record button routine. But, the exported WAV has no content. I had thought the reason that I couldn't hear anything when I played the project back in Live was because Iim still struggling with the (supposedly easy) config. But when I opened the WAV in WinAmp and it told me the 64kb file had 0 length in musical content, I knew there was a problem. Among the list of newbie mistakes, what might be the most likely?

not global record, you want the lil rec circle on the clip itself (session)
but, could you see a waveform in either the clip view or the arrangement view?
trying to determine if its a rec problem or an export problem
to hear and export you would set monitor back to auto ....

Errr .... actually it wasn't a waveform I saw but a vertical blue bar that varied in height with the input level. Seems like a rec problem. Like when I was in driver's ed class and one kid kept confusing the clutch with the brake. I'll give it another try. Thanks!
(P.S. Did you get your screen name from this guy?

i would test it in session view...you will see a waveform appearing as you rec in the clip view below...if thats blank, theres a missing link in your input chain somewherez
...my name is more a shout to my Gramma...that could have been my first name growing up, lol...
