Just curious as to what specific USB hubs people use.

I have multiple D-Link DUB-H7 and DUB-H4 units.. They've always worked great for me on personal and work computers.

Hiyatek USB 2.0 Design Hub 7P.

having multi-transaction-translators they handle a mix of different speed USB devices gracefully.

internally, most 7 port hubs consist of a pair of 4 port hubs cascaded in such a way that not all the ports are created equal, e.g. with the D-Link DUB-H7 i found that the order i plugged stuff in would change how reliably things connected to my laptop.

Am I wrong in thinking that $20-$30 for the 7-port hubs is just insanely expensive?

And what justifies the $20-30 price for 7 ports, when 4 ports are less than half that? Adapters don't cost that much to produce.

you are right that a cheap 7 port hub should be cheaper than a pair of cheap 4 port hubs, if it is just two 4 port hubs cascaded together inside.

however all hubs are not created equal, as i mentioned above. and it's more complicated to make a 7 port hub work really well so that all the ports work the same, and so that different speed devices are handled optimally.

My vote is for the Belkin 7 port hub, common, and bulletproof so far after 4+ years.

With everything you get what you pay for, a cheap 4 port hub is going to work in most situations, but if you have controllers and devices that are USB powered a cheap USB hub will of course fail to keep them running. You'll get controllers losing connection to your laptop at a much higher rate.

Lastly, electronics in general are really really cheap, we can complain about the cost of computers and peripherals all we want, but the shit is way more complex than an alternator in your car and costs 1/2 what an alternator costs, yet we want to search around and finds it for 1/10th the price. IF you do, you have no right to complain when your system starts acting funky.

I got a Hama 5 port hub, that has a power switch. I got it cos the novation impulse doesn't have a power switch. ABout £15 I think

I bought a multi TT hub and have been very happy with it. Was $20 or so. I think the mfr was Cables Unlimited.

+1 for Belkin.

My Sony Vaio is hopeless at regulating power to it's USB ports. Sometimes it's so busy going 'ooooh look at me I'm a Soooooooony mmmmm' that it just forgets to do things little like that, even with advanced power options set to a custom 'full pooouwaaah!!' setting. Data transfer is always fine which is you know, nice so I've found using a little 4 port powered Belkin F5U404 hub is ideal. And technically the Stanton SCS3m qualifies as a hub too although it's of no real use for shifting data around as it's only 'full speed' rather than 'hi speed' (don't you just love IT terminology?)
