some projects freeze, hard drive indicator

so some of my tracks just keep pausing, freezing, i realise its due to the amount of tracks,
but i exported all audio last night, loaded it up in a new track, then i freezed all audio tracks
and the hard drive indicator is staying on all the time, and my audio wont play, is this an early sign of hd failure? should i back up now?
i thought running audio would be better than 20 channels of different vst with fx, but im still having issues ! i keep my ableton projects on an ext harddrive, im now thinking i need to copy it all to my main internal hd
any advice would be much appreciate, hate wasting time with problems that stops you enjoying making music
