lately i was pondering purchasing a mac, for stability issues mainly, and cause it looks good. but i hated to pay so much for it. now i got myself a thinkpad edge e325 with an ssd board, this cost me about 450 €. I´m planning to install Ubuntu (new to linux), getting bitwig (runs on linux) and I´ll have to get myself a new soundcard cause the old one (emu 0404) is not supported.
I´ll get what you mac users get for half the price.
thoughts?

I'm guessing bitwig finally ran into legality issues.
When they first released the full blown video teaser, they insinuated a couple of weeks until beta testing started, that was 2 months ago, Jan 12th. I'm wondering if Gerard's answer about bitwig at the Henke talk in London, meant just that.

Is this documented somewhere?

I won’t turn this thread into a flame war but people also usually use Macs because they are considered more stable and it has also been reported that Windows runs better on Macs. Of course no computer is 100%.

The question was (paraphrased) 'How do you feel about Bitwig?' and his answer (paraphrased) was 'we take imitation as a compliment'.
However, from the length of time he took to answer and the curtness of the reply, one could speculate that he feels quite hostile towards bitwig.
Having said that, Behles was careful not to say anything revealing about Ableton / Bitwig so we should not put words in his mouth...

Well bitwig made their official video announcement on Jan 12th I think. It's March 12th, I remember the bitwig email saying something that led me to believe the beta would start in a "few weeks."
Then I read this at the henke in london thread.
jellycaster wrote:There was a question about Bitwig, which Gerhard Behles answered very professionally with his CEO hat on, saying that imitation amounted to a validation of Live's interface (as if it needed one!)
OOPS, now I realize it says "validation," the first time I read it I though it said "violation"
Nevermind.

Are you talking about bitwig or macfag? If the latter, I will join it.

So it's going the way this forum members expected firstly, except some bitwig fanboy and new forum members comes from bitwig office.

Huh? emu404 should be fully supported.
While bitwig may run on linux, but as with any linux host there's still an issue with 3d party plugs.
You have a bunch of basic ladspa, dssi, vamp and even a handful of native vsts.
But none of the big boys have linux support. Sou you have to use wine wrappers for windows plugs,
which stability and performance vise is less than ideal.

my linux-guru-friend converted to mac when he started to make music with the computer, he told me that he just wanted to make music and not solve technical issues with his operating system. but this was like 3 or 4 years ago.
but I would love to see linux getting stronger, just now when apple is doing those moves with the app-store and all this restrictive stuff in order to convert personal computers into locked down media-centers for the content industry.

I was just making a guess based on information I misunderstood, which makes my above statement out of context.
