I'm setting up a live rig and have to use a USB hub for a few controllers. Having awful trouble with the damn USB connections coming loose with bass and loosing midi connections.

Can anyone recommend a USB hub that has real solid ports? Or some physical hack to keep USB plugs in place?

Dunno if it's gonna do it really - would rather not have the laptop covered in glue either.

if it's as bad as you say, then you need to sort out a better way to mount all your gear so that it is not getting slammed by all the vibrations...

the connectors in your usb hub might be worn down. Might not be a great solution but I would suggest maybe getting a replacement hub and/or replacement usb cables.

Also you could try insulating the usb when playing live. e.g. have a small blanket (or similar) under the usb to absorb any vibrations from bass, etc

That's the whole point of gaffer tape (and why it's not cheap). It locks stuff down but doesn't leave any sticky residue.

If you (or anyone else)is looking for a new USB hub, this is the best one I've found for the price. It's multi-TT (so there's plenty of bandwith and power)and works great.

I use small velcro strips like this to secure my cables and hub to whatever is nearby. I like to bind it to a vertical support on my desk.

that looks like pretty decent for that amount of money. Do you think it will have enough juice to power a Launchpad, a Nocturn & a Akai LPK25 at the same time (alongside a mac mouse/keyboard combo)?

Thanks all. I've had some success since my 1st post:

Replaced a lead or 2 - helped a lot.
Bought L-shaped leads for some connections, bit sturdier.

For the connections to the controllers I've used Sugru to make semi-permanent connections. Its great stuff, check it out! http://www.sugru.com
