can anybody point me towards resources on running an internet radio station? i have waded in a little bit on my own and its confusing. i need help getting up and running.

i have a newer model imac, a macbook, and an ipad. i run a label and want to broadcast our music 24/7.

i have concerns about security, using a personal internet connection to host like this. ideally i'll get a dedicated server, but for now the station will be hosted on one of my personal computers.

are some stations easier to set up than others?

right now i'm looking for a free service, free for me as the broadcaster, free for listeners, and hopefully get an app on their smart phone (xm, shout cast, etc)

you could host it yourself at home but your bandwidth will not be enough once you get more than a few simultaneous listeners. Especially at any decent quality.

I have gone through the motions with Shoutcast but as far as I understand it you still need to set up a server. This is where I'm running into snags - the setup guide is mostly geared towards Windows but is obviously older, because it references Windows 95. I put up a post on the Shoutcast forum.

Mixlr is what you want. Free and easy.

+1 for Mixlr. I've run both shoutcast and icecast servers in the past and you do need a lot of bandwidth or a paid hosting solution to really make it feasible.

Mixlr is infinitely easier and the only bandwidth required is to get your broadcast output to their server.
