DSP Quattro 3 also works.
Anybody buying it now should get the upgrade to DSPQ4 for free or very cheap.
New features in 4 here-

So if I just "save" the edit in any of those - it is automatic destructively saved in Live?
In Audacity I needed to "save as" which totally broke the workflow

Been a little while since I used the "edit" function in Live, but while you have your two tracks editor open you can't access the waveform in Live, when you close the editor it rebuilds the waveform in Live with your edits, and you only have to hit "save" in the editor before you close it. Audacity is weird, pretty cool for free, but yeah I don't think you'd have a problem in any paid for editor.

I use a mac, but really love Sound Forge - so much that I pretty much installed Parallels just for that. I don't know, I just got really used to it and every time I used another editor it would just annoy me.
I set Sound Forge as my editor in Live and when I click edit, it opens Sound Forge in parallels (coherence mode) and works as if it was running natively. Once I save (not save as) and close the file in Sound Forge, the audio in Live updates with no issues. Given that works - even with the added complication of parallels - I would think any paid for editor worth it's salt should really work.

I use Melodyne DNA with the edit button and it's great.

Don't know, if it helps, may at least do so for uncompressed input files:
Import / Export Preferences - Audacity Manual, try and toggle the settings for importing uncompressed files.

I use Amadeus Pro (bought in App Store) and for price 45 euro - I think it's really good (advanced batch processing, multiband denoising, etc.)
Works stable
Cheers!

I used to use wavosaur too.
Shame on me now I do everything in ableton live
live is like a macgyver tool for musicians and sound designers

Peak and Peak LE also work just fine (on Mac) but I too really like (and now miss) Sound Forge. Not sure I'm ready to try Parallels on my old G4 though!
Hermanus has it right though, what can be done in an external sample editor to an internal sample that you can't just do directly in Live? Just curious.
