Naming USB devices.

Hi,

Wondering if anyone could help shed some light on this quandary I've got:

I've got a number of midi devices (synths/drum machines, etc)hooked up to Win 7/Live 7. They're all connected via those USB/midi converter cables.

The problem is that I've got about 6 of them and they're all named confusingly. So I've got a USB Midi Device,a USB Midi Device Port 2, a USB Midi 2.0, etc.

Now my initial plan was to physically label the cables by their somewhat cryptic names - but unless my imagination is getting the better of me - they occasional seem to change their name, so this wouldn't work.

Is there a solution to this? In an ideal world I'd like to permanently alter their names, so they'd correspond with whichever device they were controlling..

Right! Arggh, doesn't the name that pops up come internally from the device itself? I highly doubt there's any way to change it unfortunately. :|

Arggh indeed! I reckon they are the names of the device itself - just thought they could be a way round this. It wouldn't be so much a problem if some of the ports didn't occasionally stop working and need the USB cables swapping round!

Download SiSoft's Saandra and look under USB devices tab and it will give you the manufacturer's names and what port it's connected to.

Thanks Anubis - do you mean the USB manufacturer's name though? Problem is, most of the USB Midi cables are identical, so I'm not sure this would help.

It depends on how the manufacturer identifies the item. Sometimes it's the product name.
