Will you use Automatic Updates in 8.3?

I'm on the fence. Generally i don't recommend people changes versions the week of a performance in case it introduces new issues for them. But then again, I usually install the latest build the day it's released anyway. So should I turn on automatic updates?
Will you?

I really like having separate folders and managing the different versions myself. It's good to have a version to go back to if something bad changes. Plus, I'm quite obviously here often enough to take care of my own updates in a couple of extra clicks.
That said - I will activate "usage data", because I see it as my vote toward the application being more as I want it. If I don't tell them what I want, how can they know what to do ?

I've got it activated, I only use one Live set though. If shit hits the fan I will just go back to an 8.2.whatever.
I agree, though, being able to updating on my own terms seems logical, however maybe Ableton have a lot of confidence about future rock solid versions.

I will definitely use automatic updates. I can't remember an instance where ugrading Live introduced any new issues on my system, would be nice if all apps just updated automatically IMO.

No, I'm perfectly capable of doing it myself. I would be OK with the less intrusive "check for updates at startup" routine other DAWs and software I use does, this gives you a chance to back up everything before updating etc.
I routinely skip updates that add nothing to my setup or don't apply to my situation. It's very rare that's it's an issue but it's annoying when it happens. Had it happen at least once with Ableton, NI, Logitech, and Apple updates of various software.

I prefer to decide myself when to update. I hate stuff that decides itself when to turn on and off. Alarm clocks where the first, now every little device wants to buzz and hum and restart and get on your nerves.
8.3. brought two new features that I definetly did not ask for. automatic updates and automatic soundcloud uploads. Call me old fashioned, but I prefer to decide myself when to do what. And listen to a rendered file before uploading. What a stupid idea, automatic upload.

No. I have separate systems for DAW and internet.

Both are automatic if you enable them. You can turn the auto update off in preferences and the SC upload off in the Export Audio menu. You can choose.

Good point. With the change in handling versions I was imagining things like Chrome where you don't actually have multiple versions installed at once. I suppose if you can still do that, it's not so much of an issue.

I recently upgraded from 8.2.6 to 8.2.8 and Max for Live devices no longer opened in Max when pressing the Edit button. I had a show coming up where I was doing a lecture/demo of the devices at a festival. Spent a day on phone with Cycling74 support and no one could figure out what happened. I ended up having to use a different machine with 8.2.6 on it for my show.
Made me question updating around show dates.

Really? You can't remember any issues at all? Wow. I have a really stable and trouble-free set up, but I still remember when 8.1.3 changed the way that plugins with automation envelopes loaded. It made everyone's set sound different.

Or that version ( 8.2.2 ? ) where there was a bug in the warping transients and they played twice.
Or that currently, it appears that 8.3 does not work with clyphx.
How often have you seen posts from people asking for the old download link because something in a new version broke for them? Now that issue will be worsened. surely we all know that with very different setups and working methods it's foolish to suppose that all updates will work so flawlessly that the old install can be auto-deleted. We cannot get those "safe" installs back!
For me the safety of manually installing and keeping multiple versions far outweighs the cost of being caught out with a version that has some new issue or strange feature.
The effort for me to download and install manually is minimal, in fact it's far less than typing this post, and the benefit is : I feel like I am holding the steering wheel.

I'm not saying other people haven't had issues, I'm saying it's never been an issue for me.

From the 8.3 thread
bammer wrote:hey guys, slightly off-topic but... have you been able to use Launchpad just fine with v 8.3?
I have updated both Automap and Live yesterday and Launchpad looks dead to me now... going back to 8.2 later today but was wondering if this is common...
Cheers!
Yup automatic updates are a swinging idea.

Like Tarekith, I haven't had many problems from upgrades, but I don't upgrade every version either. I personally would prefer to have the following or similar options:
- A) Do nothing, don't pester me with a pop up, etc.
- B) Quick version check on startup, if new version, popup with option to ignore permanently
- C) Automatically check for updates and download, but do not install
- D) Automatically check for updates, download, and install.
This caters to everyone from "Performance Critical" installations, to more hobbyist owners of Live, and helps automate some of the more inconvenient tasks (not saying it's terribly difficult to currently click the "Check for udpates" button, download and install the package -- I'm just saying).
Of course, even with such thorough options, people will still complain that they even have an option for this, because obviously everyone uses the software for the same exact reasons and ways. To think that someone might make use of an option that you are freely able to ignore could potentially create a black hole and destroy mankind.

Option B is the obvious no brainer solution.
