Recording Synths External and vsts's, latency issues?

Hi guys,
Currently running Ableton live 8 suite, mac 2.3ghz dual core mac osx 10.6.3, fireface uc interface. Sometimes when i record synth's i notice the recording seems off a little. Example when im recording and i got to the audio clip i see the beginging of the start point is not at the farthest left most spot. There is often a little grey area there and sometimes when i delete that grey area the clip is on time and some times i will just expand over the grey are and the clip is on time all depends. Sometimes i notice that for instance the audio waveform is slightly off. So i rerecord it and its perfect? I also notice sometimes two clips in the audio track have been recorded into the arrangement view one clip is very small and barely noticeable and then there is the one bar of audio i recorded? Is this latency? Is it normal to do two take of recording synths to get it right? Sorry for this mess of a post im just trying to convey all of the info i have on this seemingly little problem.
