When I open Live, the Lesson titles under the Help Menu are written in Japanese, and the text in the Lessons View is replaced with Question Marks (Question marks are a failed attempt to display Japanese text, I guess.)

I'm a "gaijin" living in Japan, and I have the Live 4.1.1 demo installed on my English language Windows XP sp2 system. (same on sp1). The "Language for non-Unicode programs" in Control Panel's "Regional and Language Options" is set to Japanese because I need Japanese support for reading emails, checking the local weather, logging into my bank, running some non-unicode Japanese language applications, chat online in Japanese, etc etc... I live in Japan and need to communicate in Japanese *sometimes* (to the best of my limited ability)

Setting the "Language for non-Unicode programs" to English, REBOOTING and starting Live again resolves this, but it is inconvenient to have to then change this setting back to Japanese again and REBOOT AGAIN just to be able to read an email that arrives written in Japanese, or to use any Japanese software...

This is often a gripe for those of us in a small minority from a non-asian background living in an Asian country and needing support for the Asian characters on our non-Asian language machines... Some software titles "cleverly" choose the language of the interface based on the "Language for non-Unicode programs" settings, rather than let you specifically choose which language to install. This is a WRONG assumption (Ahead Nero!!!! Microsoft, no excuse! You WROTE the operating system!!!!) Ableton Live has mostly got it right...

Setting the "Language for non-Unicode programs" to be an Asian language means we want non-Unicode text to be displayed in that selected Asian character set. Simply this. Nothing more. It doesn't mean we want our software interface, or any part of it, to change from the language we chose at installation time.

Once this is fixed in the Lessons View, you will have one more impressed customer registering the Demo and using Live!!! I can read help menu text, so that doesn't bother ME, but still, it is a bug...

Or is there at least a workaround to always force English on Live?

Hi Protege,

you can set the desired language within Live's preferences dialog, in the 'Misc' section. Only by default Live chooses the language from the system.

Do you see the "?" sign in all Lesson? And what about the other japanese texts within the software? Are they broken too?

Brilliant! Thanks! It was already set to US-English (which is what threw me off the first time), and I had chosen English when I installed too.

Anyhow, I set it to German, restarted Live, set it to English again and restarted again and all is well. Funny, though. Japanese was NOT one of the options in the Menu. Just German, Spanish French and English.

But, problem fixed. Thanks!!!!

Maybe I might set my Encoding to Mongolian and see what the Help Menu displays next time!

Or maybe I might just make some music....

Japanese was NOT one of the options in the Menu. Just German, Spanish French and English.

There is also a japanese version of Live available. Check on the download section. Only in this japanese version you can additionally choose "Japanese" as language.

That's fine. All I neeeded was to get rid of all traces of Japanese... Was just curious why I got some japanese text when Japanese wasn't even a language option.
