A VST plugin to record individual tracks in ableton for mac?

Hi

I've been looking for a plugin that will run with ableton which will enable me to record each track separately, on the fly for live performance capture. This is so I can mix my set later on with multiple channels. I want to accomplish this internally, as I have already separate tracks and buses running out of my motu ultralite to the soundman. In order to split them up again to be recorded takes too many cables and input/outputs. I think voxengo recorder would do it but thats only for PC. I just want a plugin that I can add on top of my tracks that will record to wav.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Can you record it in the ableton arrange view? Then if you need to mix in another DAW select "all tracks" when you bounce them out in the render menu.

If you need audio recordings of your MIDI track performance you could do it internally via sends to other audio tracks. Or just record the MIDI as played and render it later.

Hey man, thanks for the reply. I'm afraid I cant record it in live's arrangement section because I am using an apc 40 and part of my set is to use the global stop and play buttons--- that stops the recording --- Is there any way to set it that the recording can still keep going even if you hit the stop button?? probably not :)

essentially I need the tracks recorded by something thats going even if I hit stop

I can't help you with the plugin for recording... However, I was wondering if you had tried Soundflower with an app like Reaper or Audacity?

Yup. Been down that road unfortunately. With Soundflower, there is no way use both soundflower AND my soundcard at the same time. You see, my soundcard is sending channels out to the front of house, so that set-up would then only give me the audio that goes into reaper/audacity, and then I'd have to figure out a way to get that audio out to the desk, not to mention the latency that something like soundflower would introduce. If I could set just some bus channels to go out with soundflower for just the recording, and then remain using my ordinary soudcard for everything else, that might be possible, but I dont think there is a way to do this is there?

At the moment my best option I think is just having another copy of ableton running and try and work out a system with decreasing my outputs so that I have enough space on my card and do it the cable way.. but I really wish there was a system where a plugin would listen and record whats coming on each channel. It sounds like it would be simple to do.

I wonder why they dont make sound recorder plugins for mac?

Is there any way you could use the "stop all clips" on the APC and restart using the appropriate master instead? That would keep recording going I think.
I appreciate this would mean changing the way you do your set and might not work for you. But that's the only way I can think of doing it short of the cable option (or arranging with the sound engineer to take a split off the desk and recording it).

That's right Tim, that would be a work around.. but that changes too much for me. I have my global quant set on 1bar, as this works best for recording clips.. But often I want to stop things half way through a bar or even in uneven timings. I dont want to have to fiddle around with global quant settings in order to achieve this. Thanks anyway..

I see. I guess my situation is a bit different. I don't have an issue with the routing because Reaper has that box you can check where it allows for the input & outputs to be different soundcards (Soundflower=In/Saffire Pro40=Out). I use this so I can record my narrative separately from the other audio tracks when I make a video tutorial. This gives me more flexibility when I mix it all together later on.

However, I haven't tested the latency since it wasn't an issue on my end. If it were significant I can see where that would cause issues in a live situation.

Good luck, I hope you find something to bridge that gap.

On a similar but slightly different issue, I wonder has anyone here done what the OP is looking for? Specifically recording multiple channels on the same machine. I'm curious about whether this creates issues streaming large amounts of data off the hard drive while at the same time recording (few/many) separate tracks.

Not sure if it will work, but I've used Audio Hijack in the past to capture audio from apps running in OSX:

Always worked well for me even when using a 5400 rpm internal.

Have you tried making an Aggregate Device in Audio MIDI Setup Utility?
