Anyone tried Windows 8? No sound on macbook

My son wanted me to install it on the bootcamp partition over XP on his 2009 white macbook
everything seemed to work ok except the onboard sound. I've spent hours trawling the internet and quite a few people seem to have had the same problem with Win 7 as well, but I couldn't find anything that worked.
Anyone else done this?
