Where the fuck is my sample? Please help

Honestly ableton is really starting to piss me off. I asked a simple question the other day about how to make sure ALL of my shit saves and someone told me the collect all and save feature would make sure all of my samples saved to the project folder.

Well lets just say that yesterday I lost a few of my recent racks entirely. It seems like I can't do a single bit of organizing to my als and project files without something fucking up.

So I lost those tracks and said fuck it, there is no getting them back so why be upset. I lifted myself up and started a new track last night which I was very pleased with.

So I pulled up the new track today and everything was like it was supposed to be. In order to avoid the incident that happened yesterday I decided I wanted to put this new track into an entirely new project folder, get all my shit organized, and back it up on my flash drive.

So I dragged the als file into a new project folder and was going into the actual song to rename all of my samples and organize everything before I backed it up.

Low and behold ONE of my key samples is "offline"! I had 3 main samples on there. All of them were from the same audio track that I sliced to midi and played different parts to. Why in god's name are the other 2 there but only 1 is missing?

Is it hiding somewhere in my computer because I tried to move the file? I don't understand why only 1 would be missing.

This shit is really getting old. It seems like it's literally impossible to organize my music and delete old unwanted tracks without something important going missing.

open the help window, have it auto-search your sample

the trick is to get organized before you save, then Live knows where to find things

dont move shit around after you save, prepare a nice spot for everything beforehand..if you think about it, this is one of the beauties of live, one thing that helps it operate so quickly, is that it is not holding all these heavy wave files, only referencing them thru the program...it has to know exactly where to find it, one folder away might as well be 100 miles

also remember: it is an inanimate object, the computer, you might as well get mad at a rock or a tree stump

hey potty mouth - ALWAYS let Live do ALL of your file manipulations and use Collect All and Save. maybe make a quick demo set and practice manipulating files with a set you absolutely don't care about. do an action and then observe what Live does and how it handles different situations.

it's always the stump's fault.

this is why Live didn't know where the samples were. save a copy of the set from within Live instead, then the sample references won't break. then when you do a collect all and save Live will automatically pull the samples from the old locations.

this subject is still sometimes a little gray for me, but if you can play by the rules it always goes better. There should be a file management section in the manual. it is helpful.

when you "collect all and save" make sure you you have all the boxes as "yes". Anytime you want to move something, do a "save as" from within live and then collect all and save.
