Major Distortion and Clipping on low levels?

Hi,

this may seems strange or noobish but I'm having some serious problems setting up live with my external mixer. I'm running live through the 2 Xone K2s soundcards into my Behringer DDM4000 and then out to my speakers. When I launched a clip and brought the volume up on my mixer the sound was horrible and distorted suggesting clipping. However, in live the signal was barely above -30db with nothing to suggest clipping? I had an EQ 3 on the channel in live with bass, mid and highs on something like -20db. As well as this my mixer's channel and master volume levels were showing a signal barely above -20db. I'm scratching my head here as to why the signals so low but theres really bad distortion coming through the speakers? Am I missing something.

Cheers

Make sure you aren't using the phono inputs on the mixer. Phono inputs have a gain boost on them. You want line inputs.

ah that may be the problem, I'm just added the external mixer so it's quite new to me. Will check to see if it improves

Cheers
